Truth in Art

Have you seen great Broken Hartz protest art from BH Warriors and wondered where it all ends up?

They go to our “#BHwarriors Art” Pinterest board, of course!

You may remember, Pinterest was one of the sites where Hartz Mountain Corporation infringed on our servicemark, leading to Hartz being handed a third straight defeat in its attempts to censor our mission.

Since then, our boards have been growing, becoming ever more populated with supporter submissions. We’d like to share some of those submissions with you today.

This first piece comes from less of a BH Warrior and more of a BH Compatriot, HartzKills.org.

We’ve been absolutely thrilled by the level of attention we’ve received from this excellent Hartz protest website that’s been in operation for years, but when this graphic was created in honor of our 13-day Twitter trend, we were over the moon!

Next up, we have a submission from one of our longest standing, strongest supporters; Lulu (@Lulu_Lindi on Twitter). Lulu’s involvement in our mission has earned her the title of BH Ambassador.

Continuing, the revelation Skelanimals has partnered with Hartz prompted active Hartz opponent, Boycott Hartz (found on Facebook and Twitter) to add the following graphic to its prolific body of protest compositions:

Though slightly newer to our mission; BH Warrior, Corina (@Rinarubee on Twitter), has made many contributions to the mission, including this important message for Hartz:

The last example of great Hartz Mountain Corporation protest art we will be sharing today comes from none other than BH Warrior, Guye (@Di_sss on Twitter). When it comes to BH Warrior art, Guye is the grandfather. He pretty much launched the artistic wing of our mission all on his own, inspiring us and others to follow suit. Here is just one of his many excellent creations:

Who is Broken Hartz?

We are all Broken Hartz.

Everyone who has ever suffered at the hands of the negligent, callous, profit-driven beast known as Hartz Mountain Corporation.

Everyone who has witnessed this company’s product lines: flea treatments, food and even toys sickening, injuring and killing animals in America, Canada and elsewhere.

Everyone who has ever suffered at the hands of Hartz Mountain Corporation’s like-minded counterparts.

Every animal they have sickened.

Every animal they have injured.

Every animal they have killed.

Every family they have destroyed.

Every person made to feel guilty by these reckless corporations.

Everyone they have lied to.

Everyone they have cast aside.

Everyone they have tried to silence.

Everyone they have threatened.

Everyone that has become aware of this issue, been shaken by it and inspired to rise up and take action.

We ask you to join with us and get loud.

If you’ve already joined us, get louder.

Together, we can do what the system has failed to achieve.

“Panic” Button

Hello Readers,

As you can imagine, the world of social media can be very scary to a corporation like Hartz that has so much to fear in the manner of public backlash, but they have a “cunning” solution to that problem:

We’d like to take a look at three recent examples of this strategy, the first of which involves a follower who contacted us shortly after posting on Hartz’ Facebook wall about their product making her cat deathly ill 5 yrs ago:

In the screenshot above, this Hartz Victim tells us:


“I just posted on Hartz about my cat getting critically ill 5 years ago from their crappy flea product. I said my Vet said it had chemical in it that were toxic to cats. I asked WHY there are still selling their product. I know several other people whose cats got sick from the flea meds. There cats wer not as lucky as mine, they died. I re-checked their site 10 minutes later and my post had vanished….unbelievable…what sick, unethical bastards!”


Given how often we have seen Hartz delete complaints as well as comments from protestors, we fully believe the individual above despite us having no physical proof of this individual’s claim.

With these next two examples, however, we have documentation.

Here is an individual, unaware of our organization (to our knowledge) that contacted Hartz:

The Hartz Victim in the screenshot above states:


“Can you tell me why my cat is dead the day after applying your flea and tick medication? You portray it as safe, but I don’t think that he has the same opinion as you. The Vet said that all of you that sell this crap ought to be prosecuted.”


Before moving on, we ask you to note the comment underneath the death complaint. You’ll see in the screenshot below, this comment now features a different comment on top of it, proving Hartz’ decision to delete the death complaint rather than respond or allow members of the public to see the truth.

Moving on, we’d like to conclude today’s post with the story of Sangha.

Sangha’s family found us shortly after going through a very traumatic experience.

 

 

Through contact with the Hartz Victim above, we learned a picture of Sangha was posted on Hartz’ wall as well, in the interest of calling more attention to this matter of public safety.

Upon learning this, our organization obtained the following screenshot:

By noting the time stamp information offered by Facebook, combined with time stamp information in the bottom-right corner of the above screenshot, you can determine the posting of Sangha to Hartz’ Facebook wall occurred on June 11, 2012 at 10:56pm.

Applying this same technique to the screenshot below, you’ll notice the Hartz Victim did not post any comment on the photo until 5:33am the following morning.

It took Hartz Mountain Corporation until 3:30pm to take note. This cost them, as evidenced by a separate individual taking note and commenting. We are sure others saw this as well.

This time Hartz tried pasting in their form response:

Here is the conversation found in the screenshot above:


[Hartz Victim]:

“This cat, my cat, my healthy beautiful cat, died just over a week after receiving her first dose of Hartz Ultraguard for cats and kittens.”

[Other Individual]:

“I am so sorry. She was a beautiful, sweet kitty.”

Hartz:

“Hi [Hartz Victim]. We are very sorry to hear about the loss of your cat. As pet parents, we know that losing a beloved member of your family can be devastating. We would like to learn more about what happened and ask that you please call us immediately at 1-800-929-3566.”

[Hartz Victim]:

“Based on the amount of complaints you have already received, I’m positive you already know what happened to my cat. Please, stop selling the Ultraguard product.”


Once Hartz knew the jig was up and this Hartz Victim wasn’t going to be silenced, they promptly deleted the posting. This can be proven by looking back at the screenshot of Sangha’s posting before any comments were made.

You’ll note, there is a posting below the Hartz Victim’s post of a small dog in a sink with Hartz shampoo in the background.

However, in the screenshot below, you’ll notice the dog in the sink posting now has a different posting featured directly above it.

Hartz may have deleted the comment in an effort to silence this victim, but they will not succeed.

Not only did this particular victim alert Broken Hartz, they have alerted HartzVictims.org as well with this posting of Sangha’s death.

The actions documented above leave us with further doubts as to the truthfulness with which Hartz approaches its incident report submissions to the EPA, using nothing but the “honor system”.

We will be creating an infographic for Sangha to accompany other Hartz Victim infographics, found in our Warrior Kit and will be distributing this graphic in many ways in order to aid HartzVictims.org, HartzKills.org, TinyTimmy.org and others in combatting Hartz Mountain Corporation’s revisionist history.

To be clear, Hartz does not delete all negative comments and complaints of adverse reactions but, in the case of death, we feel the following chart sums up the Hartz Facebook Team’s position:

Penny Fur Yer Thoughts

 

Yes, Readers, the time has arrived! An official BH affiliate has appeared on Twitter, codename: @bhpenny.

Penny was given a warm welcome as she popped on to the Twitter scene last night.

 



 

We were lucky enough to score an interview with this little firecracker and ask her a few questions about BH, Dr. Melinda and Hartz in general.

 


 

BH: So, your first name is Penelope, right?

Penelope: Well, that’z mah hooman’s name for me. My kitteh mom named me “Meow”. You can call me Penny.

BH: What role do you play on the official Broken Hartz team?

Penny: Well, I iz the cutest…

BH: Naturally.

Penny: I also thinks Hartz is stoopid…

BH: Noted.

Penny: …and I likes to *hiss* and *rawr* at them.

BH: Effective, but what do you do?

Penny: You sees, I luvs teh animals. You may have noticed I iz an animals. I represents a Broken Hartz affiliate on the Twitters. I investigates, I manage the Broken Hartz Pinterest account and I even made teh BH servicemark!

Broken Hartz thought it wuz time for meow to get outs, strut mah stuffs, flash mah claws and talks to teh public on mah owns. *rawr*

BH: Oh, yeah! We forgot about that. You say you manage the Pinterest account?

Penny: I dos.

BH: Hartz has a Pinterest account, too, don’t they?

Penny: Yeah. Hartz haz had a Pinterest account fer awhiles now, but they only started to use it becuz they know we iz on Pinterest too.

Our boards are way coolers than dumb old Hartzy’s and we have more followers. But we could use mores. Do you remembers how Hartz tried to infringe on mah servicemark on Pinterest?

BH: Yes, we remember quite well.

Penny: I’m not just here to be silly and cute, although I iz very cute.

BH: Yes, we’ve covered that.

Penny: I plan to do mah best to expose the dangers of the pawful Hartz Mountain Corporation, so kittehs and doggehs effurrywhere don’t get sick or die, all while being cute. Did I mention I’m cute?

BH: No, we don’t believe you did. Moving on, what are your thoughts on Dr. Melinda?

Penny: *HISS* She iz a mean mean lady. She should have her veterinary license revoked for the lies she haz told to protect stoopid Hartz. She took a vows to save us, but she broke it in exchange for monies. She probably cared about animals more than monies at one time, but not anymores. Iz sad.

BH: Yes, it is sad. What do you think about websites like HartzVictims.org?

Penny: They iz sad, too but impawtants for the hoomans to see so Hartz doesn’t keep gettings aways with hurting animals.

BH: Very true. Well, Penny, we know you want to get out there and start bringing the Broken Hartz message to the public, but is there anything else you’d like to say?

Penny: I may be small and cute, but I iz smart toos and I has seens what Hartz haz been doings and I can not haz.

I will not stops until Hartz goes away.

 


 

Penny’s no joke. Keep an eye out for this little girl. She’s sure to have a lot to say and Hartz isn’t going to like it.

She’ll be flashing her claws and spreading the truth, all while looking adorable.

Penny’s comment about Hartz having less followers on Pinterest than the Broken Hartz account she manages really got under Hartz’ skin. Because of this, they have gotten far more aggressive in their Pinterest campaign.

We are not sure if Dr. Draper is still with Hartz but, for the time period in which these comments were made, she was Hartz’ Vice President of Research And Development.

    File a complaint with the BBB.   3. Contact your state consumer affairs division. Google it.
  4. File a complaint at the store where you got the product – insist on filing the complaint with a manager.
  5. Let everyone you know (friends, families, facebook, myspace, etc…) to AVOID Hartz products because they will harm/kill your pet. Don’t use the word “boycott” because that implies that you are objecting to Hartz products based on a political agenda. This is not political – this is a SAFETY issue!

Furthermore, in reading your statement, “avoid Hartz products because they will harm/kill your pet”, I realized that you may not be aware that Hartz has a long history of decades of safely managing flea and tick issues for domestic animals. In fact, the safety of our pets is the highest priority for me and everyone at Hartz. The active ingredient in our dog products, d-phenothrin, is considered and rated by the EPA to be among the safest available on the market, and just as safe as the products you can buy from the veterinarian. Similarly, the active ingredient in our Hartz Ultra Guard topical product for cats, etofenprox, has been given the highest safety rating by the EPA, with the lowest possible toxicity of any cat topical product available for sale today, either through your local mass merchandiser or from your vet. Simply put, our products are among the least toxic available.

“Dr. Draper,

I understand that you believe your products to be safe, but you cannot ignore the heartbreaking stories, photos, and VIDEOS on this website. I can guarantee you that the distraught pet owners really do not give a hoot what the EPA says about etofenprox. It obviously needs to be re-evaluated. I am glad to hear you take the site seriously and that you have provided contact info, but I do not want to see ONE MORE PET die as a result of this POISONOUS product. I wish every pet owner could see this site, but its very existence is definitely a start. Dr. Draper, if you truly care about pets, you will TAKE THIS PRODUCT OFF THE MARKET to be reevaluated – and possibly – reformulated to meet better safety standards.

“The people at Hartz haven’t cared less about their Ultra Guard Flea & Tick Drops killing our dog. After providing them with the information they requested over a month ago, they became incognito after that. And our vet bills totaled over $909 trying to save our dog after his being poisoned by their drops.”

 


 

Broken Hartz wishes to point out:

Dr. Draper’s insulting introduction implies there are serious errors she wishes to address with shannonbad’s post, but she follows this up by only correcting some Hartz email address info, as if shannonbad being unaware of turnover at Hartz is something despicable.

The only other rebuttal made by Dr. Draper attempts to criticize shannonbad for not being aware of Hartz’ “long history of decades of safely managing flea and tick issues for domestic animals”.

Hartz has had a deplorable safety record since the eighties, riddled with injuries and deaths in countless beloved animals, human injuries, product recalls due to problematic formulations, product recalls due to mislabeling and product cancellations due to unsafe ingredients.

Lastly, Dr. Marta Draper does not specify not all Hartz Ultraguard products contain etofenprox. Ultraguard Pro and Ultraguard Plus contain etofenprox but Ultraguard OneSpot does not. It has always been formulated with (s)-Methoprene and its questionable inert ingredients.

To date, Hartz Mountain Corporation has not followed up on this matter.

Losing Tigger

“It has been a month now since tigger has passed away, and I had no idea of how harmful the Hartz products are. If I would have known about all these sad stories, then I would have never given the treatment to him. He was 10, I gave him the Hartz flea and Tick treatment, and when I gave it to him, he started foming out of his mouth, I then washed it off of him with mild soap. The day after for about a week went downhill for tigger. He wouldnt eat, causing him to lose a few pounds. By the 3rd day after giving him the treatment, I took him to the vet. They gave him fluids, and meds. It didnt help, that night he could hardly walk, didnt touch his food, and it seemed like he was going blind. Then the next day tigger passed away….. After reading and researching about hartz I am so outraged, I went into a Kmart just the other day, where I had bought the treament from and there it sat on the counters. I read an article where the production was supposed to be stopped. I told the service counter about the products, so hopefully they will look into it further. I just wish I would have been more educated about hartz, I tried contacting them and they provide no email, just a number.”

 


 

The next day, tigger4ever added:

“We will always miss him. He was the best cat I have ever encountered, and Hartz took him away.”

I read your post and wanted to answer you personally. I am deeply sorry to hear about Tigger.
The Hartz UltraGuard flea & tick treatment product you refer to, sold at Kmart and many other retail outlets across the nation, contains an active ingredient which has been fully approved by the EPA and is actually classified in its lowest toxicity rating. It is one of the least toxic pet pesticide products available on the market today.
The Hartz Advanced Care flea & tick treatment in the news article you mentioned is referencing a prior product for cats, with a totally different active ingredient, which Hartz voluntarily removed from the market 4 years ago, and is no longer available.
I noted your frustration that Hartz had no email for you to contact, and wanted to let you know we are adding that service to our website soon. In the meantime, if you would give me your contact information, I’d like to reach out to you further regarding Tigger and answer any questions you may have.

Tigger4ever then provides an email address and there are no more comments on this post. Broken Hartz attempted to contact this individual, but the email address is no longer valid.

We find it interesting Dr. Melinda acts as if she knows what product was used even though Tigger4ever never mentions a specific product.

Poor Kitty

“Harts One Spot flea treatment killed my cat. It caused acute liver failure and it happend quickly. I had called the company and was told that it contained no pesticide, just give your cat a bath, I’m sorry she’s having a reaction. They took my personal information and told me that if I could get a refund if I sent the reciept and the leftover product. Why would I save a receipt, I didn’t know this was going to happen! The refund was the least of my worries. By the time I got her to the vet she was almost gone. I was told the best thing to do was end her suffering. A couple of days later the Harts Company called me back to see how my cat was doing. I told them she had to be put to sleep because of liver failure. The lady said that it had to have been going on for a long time. I told her she was healthy before using the product and hung up. I was furious!! I’ve warned all my friends & family. I wonder how many other beloved family pets have to die this way before something is done?”

I am deeply sorry to hear about your cat, but want you to know that Hartz Ultra Guard One Spot does not contain anything that can cause liver failure or other internal damage.
The sole active ingredient in Hartz Ultra Guard One Spot is S-methoprene, an IGR (Insect Growth Regulator), which is effective in controlling young, pre-adult fleas only by impacting arthropod metamorphosis. This effect is unique to insects and other arthropod pests and has no impact on mammals. Additionally, the active ingredient is 100% non-systemic and does not pass into a mammal’s bloodstream.
The safety of S-methoprene has been well documented since 1975, when it was first registered; it is the same IGR that is used in the vet brand, Frontline. S-methoprene is even used by state and federal insect control programs to control mosquitoes in drinking water systems for humans. The use of IGR’s, such as S-methoprene, is actually recommended by both the ASPCA and Humane Society of America.

Here is the list of body systems affected by the Hartz Ultraguard One Spot product line (EPA Registration #2596-147) in 2008 according to this product’s individual report linked to the EPA Public Advisory published in March 2010:

 



 

The above list clearly provides evidence in direct opposition to Dr. Draper’s claims.

Not only were multiple internal systems damaged but, you’ll notice the liver was affected, albeit rarely. It’s important to remember, however, that many incidents do not get reported by consumers, the EPA does not include reports involving multiple animals and Hartz is strongly suspected of under-reporting incident occurrences. This means there are likely many more instances when this product has damaged an animal’s liver, as well as other internal systems.

Also, Dr. Marta Draper (like Dr. Melinda Fernyhough) tries to focus attention on (s)-Methoprene; although the EPA states, in multiple areas, its concern with Hartz Ultraguard products lies not with (s)-Methoprene, but with Hartz “inactive” ingredients.

Here is one example of the EPA’s opinion on this product:

(EPA Public Advisory published in March 2010, Page 16, Paragraph 2, Sentences 1-3)

“Incidents were reported for all products, including two products containing s-methoprene as the sole active ingredient. Companion animal safety studies were not required for these products because s-methoprene, which is an insect growth regulator, is of low toxicity to mammals. There are concerns for the potential toxicity of a formulant ingredient being responsible for toxicity of these products in cats.”

Lastly, you’ll notice this response form Dr. Marta comes three days after Trisha responded to Dr. Marta Draper on the post above, “What You Can Do (Besides Lawsuit)”. We feel this strongly suggests Dr. Draper did not miss Trisha’s reply to her comment: she simply couldn’t think of a response.

My Cat Mikki

“I used Hartz on my 9 year old cat Mikki and a few days later he was lethargic and made the most horrible meow I have ever heard. I immediatley took him to the vet. I was told that he was poisoned by the flea medicine and was as close to death as he could get and this was not the first case they had. It was at least the 10th case they have had in 3 months. We were lucky, others had died. We were able to bring him home a few days later. Unfortunately, he is now back at the vets again. This time with a complication due to the poisoning. He now has a liver problem and has been at the vets for over a week. They say he should make a full recovery. I feel blessed that I have such a great vet. Others have not been so lucky. It is horrible that these products are still on the market.

Your pets are an extension of your family. They provide unconditional love and friendship. I feel for every single person that has lost a member of their family due to these harmful products.”

I am the Hartz in-house veterinarian – I’m so sorry to hear about Mikki’s experience and glad to hear he is feeling better now.

Can you recall the name of the Hartz product referenced in your post, because the reaction you describe is not typical for any of our flea and tick treatments for cats? Usually, if Mikki was to experience any reaction to a Hartz flea & tick product, it would manifest within the first 12 to 24 hours after treatment and not take a few days to show symptoms. This gives us an indication that Mikki’s health issue would not be related to whichever flea & tick product you used but more likely due to a pre-existing condition, and I recommend that your veterinarian conduct diagnostic testing on Mikki to gain further insight.

Also, I must clear up any misunderstanding about the toxicity of Hartz flea and tick products. Unfortunately, there is a lot of incorrect and misleading information about the toxicity of Hartz products on the internet and I understand that it is easy for consumers to be confused. You should know that Hartz UltraGuard flea and tick topical spot treatments for cats are non-systemic. In other words, the treatment does not penetrate the skin, NEVER enters the blood stream and, therefore, could not cause Mikki’s liver problems. Once applied to the skin between the shoulder blades, through the process of translocation, the active ingredient in the product is carried across the skin on the surface of the cat’s body by the natural oils associated with fur follicles. When applied according to labeled instructions, this treatment is entirely safe. The formula contains the active ingredient etofenprox, which has been rated by the EPA in the lowest toxicity category of any pet pesticide active ingredient on the market; with lower toxicity than either of the active ingredients in the two leading vet brands.

What we used on Mikki was Hartz UltraGuard One Spot Treatment for cats. You state that the treatment never penetrates and is carried across the skin. What happens if he licks himself or licks another cat that has the treatment on their skin? Does it not enter his body at that time?

Mikki has been a VERY healthy cat. When I took him to my vet I told him what I had done in the last week in regards to Mikki. My vet was the one that told me he had been poisoned by the flea treatment. The problem that he had with his liver was because he lost a lot of weight due to the trauma his body went through when he was poisoned.

I find it hard to beleive that so many people have had problems with Hartz products and it is all “misleading information”.

This particular Hartz product is one of three products which are identical in terms of active ingredients, varying only in the contents of these products’ inert ingredients. This allows for compelling evidence to be derived in support of Hartz having an inert ingredient issue, which was discussed in Part Two of our Hartz Exposé, "Fun with Charts!"


 

The above lists from the EPA clearly show lethargy and vocalization to be among the most common reported clinical signs for all Hartz products named in the EPA Public Advisory published in March 2010. Not only that, this lie was totally unnecessary, seeing as how these signs are among the most-commonly reported for all products listed in the EPA’s Public Advisory published in March 2010. Dr. Melinda is just so predisposed to speak falsely, she can’t help herself.

Also, Dr. Melinda’s reply contains this little gem:

“Unfortunately, there is a lot of incorrect and misleading information about the toxicity of Hartz products on the internet and I understand that it is easy for consumers to be confused. You should know that Hartz UltraGuard flea and tick topical spot treatments for cats are non-systemic. The medical defintion for the the term, "Hepatic" is: 1) Of, relating to, or resembling the liver. 2) Acting on or occurring in the liver.

 


 

 


 

This particular Hartz product is one of three products which are identical in terms of active ingredients, varying only in the contents of these products’ inert ingredients. While there were no reported events of the liver having been affected in the case of this product, clearly, other internal body systems were.


 

In response to Dr. Fernyhough’s statement:

“When applied according to labeled instructions, this treatment is entirely safe.”

Broken Hartz has already debunked this in a previous post:

(EPA’s DATA EVALUATION RECORD FOR ENHANCED SPOT-ON REPORTING CAT PRODUCT [2596-147], Page 4, the paragraph beneath Table 1)

“Of the 33 deaths reported following only dermal exposure, 16 animals were treated by a veterinarian. Eight of these animals were euthanized. Label directions were not followed for five of the 33 deaths.”

This means, 85.85% of all deaths associated with this product occurred when the product was used as directed and the route of exposure was limited to its intended method (dermally). Broken Hartz hardly considers that to be “entirely safe.”

Lastly, Dr. Melida states:

“The formula contains the active ingredient etofenprox…”

Not only hadn’t the victim named the offending product yet but, as already mentioned above, not all Hartz Ultraguard products for cats contain etofenprox; the exception being Ultraguard OneSpot, which turns out to be the actual Ultraguard product used by the customer. As mentioned above, Ultraguard OneSpot has always been formulated with (s)-Methoprene and an unknown list of other ingredients. This can be confirmed by visiting this portion of the EPA’s website and viewing the label amendment documents, linked at the bottom of the page.

To date, Hartz Mountain Corporation has not followed up on this matter.

NO MORE HARTZ…for the LYTLE’S

“On April 18, 2009 we applied Sergeant’s Silver Flea & Tick Squeeze-On for Dogs on our 2 puggles (Daisy Mae & Jack) & our Lab Mix (Cody). All just have turned a year old in February and April.

HOW CAN THEY CONTINUE TO PUT A PRODUCT LIKE THAT ON THE SHELVES FOR CONSUMERS? I SURE WISH I WOULD HAVE INVESTIGATED THE PRODUCT ON THE INTERNET BEFORE APPLYING IT!!!

Shortly after we applied the product to Jack he started running around scratching & itching. He was whining and just could not sit still. Not knowing that it was a reaction to this product we waited thinking that it was something else making him “go crazy”. When he started foaming at the mouth we decided we better get him to the nearest vet. hospital. Before we could secure our other 2 dogs… Daisy started foaming at the mouth as well. We contacted the vet. hospital and talked to the emergency vet and she told us to bathe them with dishwashing liquid and then get them to the hospital. So after bathing all 3 dogs, loading them in the car and RACING to the hospital with 3 foaming, salvating, whining dogs and 2 distraught owners we find out that it’s the application for fleas & ticks causing this scare of a lifetime.

After a $261.80 hospital charge and several injections to each dog, a sleepless night and now today (the next day) I’m on the Internet searching this product and find all these people that have either lost or severely ill pets.

I AM OUTRAGED! Is our dogs in for more permanent health problems due to this product?

Other symptoms we have noticed SO FAR:
in the emergency room both puggles were shaking, twitching ears, twitching muscles

We had to contact the vet. hospital again this evening for more meds.

This product is causing pyrethrin poisoning on pets and the public should be told before more pet’s lives are lost!”

Could you bring us up to date, however, on the 956 adverse incidents the EPA says Hartz’s cat products were responsible for in 2008? And what about your dog flea and tick products–how many injuries and deaths in 2008? How many in 2007? How many so far this year?

And just how many cat and dog injuries and deaths do you people at Hartz believe is an acceptable number? Your spokesperson, John Mullane, told the USA Today in 2005 that 7,000 cat injuries and deaths were a small number compared to the number of applications…that was just prior to the EPA issuing a Cancellation Order on your products. Is that an acceptable number of cat or dog injuries and deaths–7,000?

Oh, one final question–what kind of flea and tick products do you use on your own pets?”

 


 

While Hartz does not make Sergeant’s Silver Flea & Tick Squeeze-On for Dogs (EPA Registration #2517-85), their parent company at the time, Sumitomo Corporation, holds the patent to Cyphenothrin (AKA GOKILAHT) and sells this negligent, out-classed chemical to Sergeant’s; therefore making them the responsible party, when all is said and done.

Sumitomo has inked a deal with Unicharm, a leader in the asian pet-care market, to hand over primary shares of Hartz Mountain Corporation to them. To the best of our knowledge, this deal gets finalized in May 2012, but Sumitomo will continue to hold a large amount of stock in Hartz and, of course, will continue to provide its reckless chemical offerings to them.

It will start to kill w/in 30 minutes. Best part is that it will also start to kill the fleas in your apartment.

Fleas do not live ON cats/dogs, they live in the carpet & furniture & only hop on the animal for a meal. Once they bite a cat treated w/ Advantage they are goners.

My 1st experience w/ Advantage I had *just* bug bombed my house, flea bathed all my cats & washed everything… days later the fleas were hopping around again. I went to my vet in tears & she told me all about the new product ADVANTAGE.

I went home & treated all my adults (no kittens), in less than 30 minutes I could see dying fleas falling off cats. I flea combed to get rid of bodies, but I never had to bug bomb again & my home was flea free soon after because as soon as new fleas hatched they would bite a treated cat & die.

REMINDER: fleas carry tape worms, have your cats checked w/in a month for this problem.

I’ve always used Hartz without a problem and we use it at the shelter where I’ve volunteered. It works. The Pro comes with a little applicator tip that burrows into the fur and makes applying real easy, it’s way better price value than Advantage, a little safer and it did the trick for Venus and Pandora…..”Didn’t it, girls”?

Broken Hartz considered providing only snippets of this “article” in the interest of preserving Ms. Williams’ “intellectual” property but, in the end, we feel she lost that long ago.

The contents of this over-the-top article provide strong evidence to suggest Hartz is guilty of shilling.

Review: Hartz Ultra Guard Plus Flea & Tick Collar for Cats

I have used Hartz pet products for many years now and I will be the first to admit it, some products work very well and some don’t. I recently purchased Hartz Ultra Guard Plus Flea & Tick Collar For Cats because my usual flea product for my cats was not doing the job. Here is what I discovered about this pet product!

My cats have been on vet recommended flea control drops and this product quit working. I have no idea why. I wondered if the fleas had developed an immunity to my usual brand of flea control for my cats. Anyway, I decided to try a flea collar since, in the past, these always worked very well on my cats. I bought the Hartz Ultra Guard Plus Flea & Tick Collar For Cats. This product cost me about eight dollars. I was very frustrated with my usual vet recommended flea product because it was not doing an effective job. Before these flea drop products came out, the kind you apply to your pet’s neck area, I had always used a flea collar for flea control on my pets. I had to do something quick so, I decided to go back to using a flea collar on my cats.

Hartz Ultra Guard Plus Flea & Tick Collar For Cats has came a long way, in my opinion, since I have used this product, many years ago. As I opened the package and followed the easy to understand instructions, I noticed immediately that this flea collar had an almost pleasant scent to it. When I stretched the collar and activated this product, a white powder appeared to let me know that the collar was ready to be placed on my cat. Gone was the medicine smell that flea collars used to have. I was impressed that this collar did not smell bad. That was a relief. I really like the design of this collar, it has an emergency snap on it, to break away, should your pet get the collar caught in something. It is also made for a loose adjustment so the collar can slip over the cat’s head, if it needs to do so. It will work effectively, even adjusted very loosely! This flea collar has an adjustable buckle and will fit most cats or kittens. It fit my pets wonderfully.

The best part about this flea collar, in my opinion, is that it provides seven months of protection. That is great! When I placed this flea collar on my cat, she did not mind it at all. She went about her daily routine with no problems. My pets had no bad effects from this flea collar. I was delighted. Now, the most important question, did it work? Yes. Immediately. I have not seen a flea or noticed my cats scratching since I put the flea collars on them! The flea collar worked very fast and I discovered it was safe and very gentle on my pets. I have no idea why my cat’s regular brand of flea control drops stopped working but, I can say, with much relief, that when I experienced this problem, Hartz Ultra Guard Plus Flea & Tick Collar For Cats saved the day! This pet product is great. It provided wonderful flea control for my pets. I rate Hartz Ultra Guard Plus Flea & Tick Collar For Cats four and one half stars out of five stars. It is a wonderful product and I will be purchasing it again. You can find Hartz Ultra Guard Plus Flea & Tick Collar For Cats in most grocery stores, pet stores and places that sell pet care products. It provided marvelous flea control!

 


 

Bridgette may have been quite literally “sold” on this product, but we are not.

The Hartz Ultragaurd Plus Flea and Tick Collar for Cats is a deadly Tetrachlorvinphos (TCVP) product and the white powder Bridgette describes can cause muscle twitching, drooling, seizures, respiratory paralysis, comas and death in humans.

Hey, at least it smells good, right?

The AVMA, Brought to You by Hartz Mountain Corporation?

A quick recap is necessary.

For those of you largely unaware of the matter at hand, Hartz Mountain Corporation manufactures flea and tick treatments that have received thousands of complaints over decades from well-intentioned pet owners, whose pets experienced a multitude of side effects: nausea, hair loss, seizures and in far too many cases, death. Many Veterinarians adamantly disapprove of this family of products. Good places to get an idea of the level of evil we are dealing with here are hartzvictims.org and hartzkills.org.

Hartz has an appalling safety record dating back to the 80′s and 90′s with their product, Blockade. They were forced to reformulate their products, but their reformulated versions continue to injure and kill and were named in a 2010 Public Advisory published by the EPA. Horrifyingly, the EPA has not forced removal of these products until they are proven safe.

So, aside from the obvious, why did we need you to know this?

While mining the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) website for information on how to report disreputable Veterinarians that choose to defend these poisons, forsaking their Veterinarian’s oath for a fat paycheck, we came upon the following:

Tomorrow (2/1/12), the AVMA will be naming their recipient of the Karl F. Meyer-James H. Steele Gold Headed Cane Award. That’s a quite a mouthful.

“The award recognizes the achievement of an individual concerned with animal health who has significantly advanced human health through the practice of Veterinary Epidemiology and public health.”

And who has the AVMA entrusted to decide the winner of such an honored distinction?

“Nominations should be emailed to Dr. Charles Thoen, AVES President and Dr. Melinda Fernyhough, AVES Secretary.”

Did you catch that?

That’s right, Dr. Melinda, otherwise known as Hartz Mountain Corporation’s Manager of Scientific Affairs and Resident Veterinarian, often found commenting in forums, suggesting the blame lies with improper use of Hartz products, not improper use of the term “pet care”. Dr. Melinda has been suspected of trolling forums as well, but whether or not Dr. Melinda and “Truthfairy” are one in the same has not been confirmed. It’s interesting to note, however, the two of them have never been photographed together :)

The Hartz affiliation with this award is far from ending there. Hartz Mountain Corporation is actually sponsoring this damn thing!

WTF?

While we at Broken Hartz understand the role Epidemiology plays in public safety and, by extension, the need for flea control in order to preserve human health standards; we are appalled to find the AVMA has chosen to allow a company that profits from selling inferior, outdated, unnecessary solutions to a problem when safer, FDA regulated, alternatives are readily available.

We no longer need to play Russian roulette with our pets in order to protect society from fleas.

Get with the times, AVMA.
